Groveland singer ready for career in Nashville

Tuolumne County singer Melissa Wray has released her first compact disc, “Red Stiletto Mood,” and is getting ready for a move to Nashville to further her career.
Recorded in Nashville over a two-year period, the new album is a 12-track collection of country songs that cover a range of styles from traditional to contemporary.
The first single, “San Antonio” — written by Lyle Lovett — was nominated for a Grammy Award as part of “The Stars Love Captain D’s,” a two-disc anthology benefiting autism awareness.
“Red Stiletto Mood” is available now at www.melissawray-nashville.com. National release is expected in two to three months, with a supporting tour to follow.
Born in Los Angeles,Wray began visiting Tuolumne County at age 6 when her grandparents, Rose and Thomas Tiano, opened Tiano’s Market in Groveland. As a young girl, Melissa worked summers in the restaurant portion of the market and customers would often put quarters in the jukebox to hear her sing along to Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life.”
“I sang that song so many times,”Wray recalled this week.
She attended Arroyo High School and Citrus College in Southern California, singing in bands and musical theater. She starred in three productions of “Evita” and was part of a 10-country world tour singing pop, country and classical music.
“I really love to do everything,” she said. “I’m partial to country music because I grew up with it, but I love all kinds of music.”
Wray made several trips between Tuolumne County and Nashville to record her album, which was produced by Robert Metzgar for the Capitol Management Group and released on the Platinum Plus Nashville label. A full roster of Nashville musicians play on the recording.
The cover portrait was shot by Laurie Terry of Utah, with all the album’s other photos taken by Rich Miller of Sonora. Wray had intended to title the album after the opening song, “Country With Soul,” but her producer opted for the more provocative “Red Stiletto Mood,” a song leaving no doubt about the singer’s intentions.
